Zanzibar Retreat Hotel is situated at Matemwe along the north-east coast of Zanzibar.

Although it had developed, Matemwe has been able to preserve its authentic atmosphere. Likewise much of the east coast it is also tidal but tides here are so pronounced and water never retreats far away. A 20 - 60 meters deep lagoon can be reached walking for about 20 minutes [approx. 450 meters off shore] but we do not recommend going alone because of currents and high waves [the lodge offers guided walks to the reef]. Conversely at high tide most of the beach in front of the hotel gets submerged and the sea arrives just a few meters away from sunbeds and umbrellas lined up along the hedge that separates the main beach from thehotel's private one. Given the presence of sea-urchins it is safer to wear sea-shoes when swimming.

Zanzibar retreat consists of twelve bedrooms eight of which [the standard rooms] located on the ground floor while the remaining four are set on the upper-floor. Two of these latter feature an outdoor balcony overlooking the sea while the other two have no balcony and overlook the garden. Whilst rooms are quite small [very small the garden rooms on the upper-floor] common areas are pleasant and comprise the swimming pool, the bar, the restaurant, a small private beach.

Overall Zanzibar Retrear Hotel is an enjoyable mid-range facility but less attractive than the neighboring Matemwe Beach Village and Sunshine Hotel above all we would say it suffers the lack of openings towards the sea.

The proximity to the coral reef has turned this part of the island into one of the most popular destinations for divers and snorkellers. These activities can be arranged with Scuba Fishing the diving centre at Matemwe Lodge.
