Unguja Lodge is situated along the south-west coast of Zanzibar.

Unlike the east coast of Zanzibar this side of the island does not offer broad beaches but small coves and provisional beaches that arise and disappear with the changing of the tides and such is the beach of the lodge: at low tide you can sunbath while at high tide the wooden staircase will lead you straight into the water. If you like walking, a green path will take you to the permanent beach of a small fishermen village not far away from the lodge.

The lodge offers twelve bungalows set amid the unspoilt vegetation. Eight of them including two family bungalows are set on the cliff facing the sea, one enjoys a seaview despite not being located on the seafront while the remaining three [the baobab villas] are set back in the plot and shaded by Baobabs and Mango trees. These latter alone feature airconditioning in the bedroom and a small plunge poo. The two two-storey family bungalows offer a double en-suite bedroom on the ground floor and two en-suite twin bedrooms on the upperfloor. Single beds can eventually be joined to form a double bed.

The lodge is complemented by the restaurant, the bar, a decent swimming pool and the PADI diving centre.

The south west coast has several excellent dive sites interesting for coral gardens, tropical fish, occasionally green turtles but it is also very interesting for large pelagic species that can be encountered in deeper waters. According to the time of travelling you might expect to see migratory whales, yellow fins tuna, barracuda, gray reef sharks, hammerhead sharks, white and black sharks, tiger sharks while dolphins are resident and normally enter the bay early in the morning. Other activities include the blue safari exploring by boat the little islets, sandbanks and secrets coves along the coast, guided walking to the fishermen villages and dhow cruises at sunset, trips to the Jozani Forest, guided visits to Stone Town which can be combined with a spice tours. Snorkelling within a short swimming distance from the beach is also possible but, so close to the shore, you should not expect to really see that much.

Unguja Lodge provides an upper-mid level of servicing and it is certainly very interesting to travellers looking for a facility contextualized with its environment and set far away from mass tourism locations.
