Until the early 90s Nungwi, a small fishermen village on the northern tip of the island, was a quiet and serene destination where one could often assist to turtle eggs hatching. Today it is the most touristy part of the island and its appearance has changed completely: the stretch of coast that extends westward from Nungwi to Kendwa has turned into a continuum of budget guest-houses and mass tourism hotels paying dearly for the attractiveness of a crystalline non-tidal sea. The stretch of coast that extends eastward has instead developed much more slowly but it it does not offers equally attractive beaches.

Unlike the east coast of the island, where a broad beach stretches for miles in both directions, the north coast is characterized by low cliffs, smaller bays and coves . At low tide one can enjoy beautiful walkings along the shoreline however no one should leave unaware of the tide-chart since swimming back at high tide, pushed by the sea against the cliff, can be quite dangerous.

Due to the large tourists turnout we no longer have a deep feeling with this part of the island and among the many we have selected just a few facilities which stand out for offering some night-life or some peculiar services or simply because they however managed to retain the relaxed atmosphere of a small facility in a lazy tropical island.
