Ruaha: this is dry season, seasonal waterholes have dried out triggering game towards the Great Ruaha River; elephants have started to dig the dry bed of seasonal streams in search of water; gameviewing is much more reliable than in green season and sightings are facilitated since vegetation has lost much of its foliage.
You might expect to find here lions, leopards, hyenas and jackals; cheetahs in the open grassland; buffaloes in the forest patches, zebras and giraffes, crocodiles and hippos, many species of antelopes including the rare sable antelope.

Great variety of birds excluding the eurasian migratory species.

Selous does not really have a full dry season as Ruaha or Tarangire or Katavi and light scattered rains remain possible every two or three days anyway starting from June and especially into July throughout October high grass gives way to short one, the level of foliage is definitely lower and concentration of game nearby rivers and lakes improve considerably compared to the conventional green season.
Animals regularly sighted include buffalos, elephants, hippos and crocodiles, giraffes, zebras, warthogs, wildebeest and antelopes, hyenas, lions, leopards and wild dogs
If lucky you might spot jackals and cheetahs as well but Selous is not famous for that.
This is surely the best time of the year for walking safari.
