Safari 809: accommodation in mid-specification lodges and tented camps

Guado del Fiume Mara

Across the Rift Valley

Ngaresero waterfalls

Day 1
Visited Park: Lake Manyara National Park
Dinner and overnight: Ngorongoro Farm House
A lush evergreen forest and large flocks of white pelicans, gray pelicans, flamingos, storks, cormorants beyond elephants, buffalos, giraffe and hippos ... if lucky tree-climbing lions.

Day 2:
Visited park: Ngorongoro crater
Dinner and overnight: Ngorongoro Farm House
After breakfast you will depart with your guide and car to spend the day game driving into the famous caldera with picnic lunch. Since you can entirely dictate the pace you might decide to leave the crater as late as possible or to return to the lodge after the picnic to relax.

Day 3
Visited park: Serengeti central
Dinner and overnight: Serengeti Kati Kati
In central Serengeti the severe dryness forced animals to adapt to different lifestyles than in green season. ... Gazelles and antelopes had to gather along permanent rivers and water sources ... predators are compelled to compress their territory close to the same water sources ... Seronera is now hosting the largest population of cats in Africa ...

Day 4
Visited park: Serengeti central and surroundings
Dinner and overnight: Serengeti Kati Kati
A full day out in the bush ... at dawn to sight predators hunting or returning from their nightly hunting forays and to witness cubs playing ... nearby the river courses where predators wait their preys moving along very predictable routes ... driving through alternative and more remote locations in the afternoon in order to enjoy a truly excellent wilderness experience where almost no other cars will be met ... lunch at the camp or pic nic, since you are travelling with private car and vehicle you can entirely dictate the pace of your day.

Day 5
Visited park: Serengeti north-east and Mara
Dinner and overnight: Lemala Mara
In August the wildebeest migration has usually reached the Serengeti Mara region and river crossing ... one of the most impressive scenes that you can witness ... should be in full swing ... After breakfast you will leave for Serengeti Mara where you will arrive after about five hours game driving accross the park ... once there you will start game driving along the Mara River banks looking for wildebeest herds ready to cross ...

Note: unlike the other facilities of this itinerary which all provide an average level of servicing, Lemala Mara is a relatively high-specification mobile tented camp. This sector of the park lacks of mid-specification facilities and only offers accommodation in rustic or luxurious camps. If you can adapt to lower budget options then you might consider staying at:
Serengeti Savannah Camp north: set about 1 km far from the river
Serengeti Wilderness Camp north: set about 30 min. away from the river, open from July the 1st]
Alternatively, should you prefer to save some more money, you might consider to stay at Lobo Wildlife Lodge in north-eastern Serengeti and reach Serengeti Mara with a daily game drive from there. From Lobo it will take about 3 hours to arrive in the Mara region and again 3 hours to come back. Transfers occur inside the park and are game drives to all effects.

Day 6
Visited park: Serengeti Mara and Lamai wedge
Dinner and overnight: Lobo Wildlife Lodge
Moving along the Mara river banks you might be able to sight elephants herds passing from one side to the other, large families of hippos resting in the water, huge Nile crocodiles and with a little luck wildebeest crossing the river... the Lamai wedge on the other side of the river and the beginning of the Mara watershed where little by little the acacia groves give way to the open savanna. This is one of the most remote areas of Serengeti, topographically very similar to Kenyan Masai Mara which extends beyond the border, here you can possibly sight wildebeest herds but also many other herbivores along with their predators although sightings of cats never reach that of central Serengeti at this time of the year. By mid-afternoon you will continue game driving towards Lobo reaching the lodge in about 3 hours.

Day 7
Visited areas: Loliondo and Natron [hiking to the waterfalls]
Dinner and overnight: Natron Tented Camp
Today you will reach Natron passing throught the wild Loliondo territory. This five or six hours long transfer will deliver you an unforgettable picture of everyday life of the Masai and Sonjo people inhabiting the area ... Along the way you will encounter some villages, children with their cattle, masai warriors and masai women adorned of their typical beadworks. It is not rare to encounter as well young boys in a black drape and white-painted face meaning they have been circumcised and initiated to become warriors. From the Rift valley escarpment the track winds down through multicolored layers of solidified lava ranging from off-white to greenish-white, ocher and anthracite gray ... After checking-in at the camp, set on the lake shores, you will start hiking upstream the Ngaresero river reaching in about one hour and half the refreshing waterfalls and the natural pools where you can enjoy a cool bath ...

Day 8
Visited park: Natron [walk to the lake shores] and Tarangire
Dinner and overnight: Tarangire Safari Lodge
Walking towards the rising sun you will explore the southern shores of the lake in order to sigh the lesser flamingos flocks. Although you will not be able to get very close to them as they will inevitably move further as soon as the distance between you and them will be judged too short you can enjoy the beautiful lake scenery with the first pinkish daylight and the impressive view back over the active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai. After breakfast you will leave for Tarangire National Park driving along a trail of glittering mica ... crossing rivers of solidified lava ... dry river-beds of seasonal streams that flow downstream from the Ngorongoro highlands ... and finally getting on site.

Day 9
Visited park: Tarangire
Dinner and overnight: Tarangire Safari Lodge
August, September and October are great months for Tarangire since the entire cast of migratory animals should have definitely returned into the park concentrating along the river valley and swamps, including felines ... Matchless, at this time of the year, by any other park of the northern circuit is the huge number of elephants that one can encounter: herds counting up to 100 individuals are no exception and there is a valley where at a glance we have been able to estimate something like 1000 individuals ... unforgettable the majestic and enigmatic baobabs that dot the north of the park.

Day 10
Breakfast and enjoy your last game drive in Tarangire along the way to Arusha. Time permitting we can arrange the visit to a coffee plantation and hot lunch on site [that has to be requested at the time of booking].
