Ras Mbisi is a little resort set alone along the western-central coast of Mafia Island.

It is a pleasant place with an environmentally approach suitable for outdoorsy travellers looking for a relaxing and remote location as well as for a fair level of comfort. The location along the west coast, shielded by the southern monsoon, is also particularly interesting for beach stays on June, July and August [refer to geography Mafia for further info on weather and winds].

Although Mafia is more stingy than Zanzibar as far as beautiful beaches are concerned, Ras Mbisi offers a decent beach and the possibility to swim all day long: at low tide one can swim approx. 150 m. off the shore while at spring tides the distance increase to about 250 m. If you like walking the beach stretches for kilometers on both directions.

The lodge consists of nine open-sided bungalows raised on stilts all with a seaview and en-suite bathroom. Electricity is produced by a bio-mass gasifier fuelled by waste and hot water is obtained by solar panels supported by a wood .

The lodge is frequented by monkeys, squirrels and coconut mice. None of these animals are carriers of disease and so far no monkey has ever entered a bungalow. To prevent this from happening  snacks should be stored  in the wooden chest. Moms should know that coconut mice are particularly fond of latex and bottles which also have to be stored in the chest.
Each night the staff will spray against mosquitoes and insects.

The lodge is complemented by the swimming pool, the lounge, the bar and the restaurant.

Activities include kayaking, biking, snorkeling with whale sharks in the Mafia channel, snorkeling and diving at Shungu mbili and Mbarakuni islets in front of the lodge, dhow cruises at sunset, bird watching and guided walks ...

We would not recommend Ras Mbisi to very keen divers who should instead consider to stay on the other side of the island in Chole Bay except from June to August when the southern wind does not allow to sail out of the bay [refer to diving in Mafia for more info]. Should you wish to dive during these month we would rather suggest to stay in Pemba island which west-coast is more shielded and offers some excellent diving sites or alternatively in Zanzibar [for further info refer to diving Pemba and diving Zanzibar].

Ras Mbisi does not accept credit cards. There is no public internet service.
