Ndarakwai Ranch

Ndarakwai Ranch is a small permanent tented lodge set in West Kilimanjaro between Arusha National park and Mount Kilimanjaro in a private 11.000 acres concession, a beautiful and very interesting area for the possible activities.

The enphasis is on horse riding, interaction with the Maasai community,
elephants, daily trekking on Shira Plateau.
The West Kilimajaro is a Masai territory and yet not a very touristic area where interaction with the local tribes is not affected by the commercial aspects inevitably induced by a stronger tourism in areas such as Ngorongoro. Therefore we consider West Kilimanjaro one of the most interesting places along with Lake Natron if you are interested in visiting local tribes.
The area is home as well to a project for the protection of elephants. Some of the oldest East African elephants, with considerably big tusks, can be sighted here. Some of them are more than 80 years old. The rare wild dogs are often sighted as well along with oryx, generuk, leopards, zebras and giraffes. Cats are inhabiting the territory but can hardly be spoted.

The third activity here and perhaps the most beautiful, is the one day trekking in the Shira Plateau: you will normally depart from the camp in 4x4, pass through the rain forest covering the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro and once you will reach the shira plateau you will start walking for about 5 hours in the moore. In a clear day the view covers the Maasai steppe below and the snowy peak of the volcano just above you.

Finally the ranch has its stable if you like the idea of riding in the wilderness.

Ndarakwai Ranch is a upper-mid specification camp consisting a main thatched building with restaurant, bar and lounge, and of
14 comfortable tents, raised on wooden platforms, each with en-suite bathroom. Hot water for the shower is carried by hands by the staff of the camp. Electricity is supplied by solar panels.
