Lua Cheia is a small tented lodge set on Mafia Island.

This is the only facility located along the north-west coast, within walking distance from a little fishermen village. It is a pleasant and relatively basic camp suitable for travellers looking for a remote location where to enjoy solitude and nature.

It consists of six tents located on a low promontory, raised on cement platforms under a thatch makuti roof, featuring en-suite bathroom with running water in basin, flush loo and shower. Electricity and hot water for the shower are supplied by solar panels. There are ceiling fans while there is no hairdryer and no air-conditioning. Deluxe tents feature a queen-size double bed and while standard tents are laid out with twin beds that can be joined for double accommodation. The outdoor verandah overlooks Mafia channel and the African coast where the sun sets.

The lodge is complemented by two open-sided bandas hosting the lounge and the dining table both located on a cliff from where the beach stretches for miles in both directions winding through clusters of mangroves.

The beach is tidal and the presence of coral outcrops suggests that it is safer to use sea-shoes when going to swim however environmentally speaking it is impossible not to appreciate this place: a piece of Africa authentically wild, untamed and unspoiled. We had a wonderful stay here.

Activities include kayaking, windsurfing, sailing, fishing and walking. It might be interesting combining a stay here with some days in Chole Bay in order to enjoy snorkeling, diving, sailing to the other islands and sandbanks.
