Travelling along the Rift Valley: Archipelago of Mafia
Home | Back

The arcipelago of Mafia is situated 25 km off the delta of the great Rufiji River and it is formed by the island of Mafia [the largest of all islands] along with the islands of Chole, Juani and Jibondo well as a number of smaller islets and atolls.
This cluster of islands is renowned for the Marine Park offering untouched coral gardens, a large variety of tropical fish and some of the best diving sites in East Africa suitable both for novice and experienced as well as for the year-round presence of whale sharks that attracts visitors from all over the world.

Compared to Zanzibar, Mafia island is lazy and sleepy and we would recommend it to those travellers used to enjoy the sea in an active way as well as to those people honestly looking for a remote beach. All other travellers had better turn their attention to Zanzibar.

Compared to Pemba it offers some more accommodation option as well as a wider range of diving sites suitable for novice divers.
