Chumbe Island is located 8 kilometers off Stone Town.

It is a protected marine reserve and coral park, surrounded by a pristine reef, with over 200 species of corals, 400 species of tropical fishes, regularly visited by turtles and dolphins. It offers a decent beach and it is an ideal destination for snorkelers while fishing and diving are not permitted.

The multi-awarded architecture blends perfectly with the surroundings. The 7 eco-lodges were designed according to sustainable architecture criteria using only local materials. Their environmental impact is minimal and each one is powered only by solar energy providing electricity and hot water. Rainwater is collected from bungalows roofs and filtered into special underground tanks. Used water of the shower and sink are filtered and led into designated tanks planted with particular species of plants able to absorb nitrates and phosphates. Eco-toilette use no water to prevent leakage into the sea and damages to the reef.

Part of the old lighthouse building, built by the British in 1904 and also restored according to the principles of sustainable architecture, is used as restaurant and visitors centre.

The island can be reached by boat in about 20 minutes from mbweni ruins, 10 minutes south of  Stone Town.
In order to get in and off the boat you will have to get into the water sometimes up to you knees. Day trips are also possible however admissions depends on the number of guests in-house that day so they can only be booked two days in advance.

The marine reserve is managed by a non-profit organization and revenues are reinvested to maintain the park and educate local fishermen. If you love nature, snorkeling and outdoors life then you will never regret spending here a couple of days.
